ANYWAY, this here collection offers up the basics of his persona — an obsessive, amoral, cranky, sticky-fingered jazz recor Wow, it turns out I dig Pekar in much the spendor way that I dig Bukowski — he validates all my teen male urges, and just carries them on into his forties and fifties. I could already relate to that level of neuroticism. Looking for beautiful books? American Splendor is not a realist novel or a diary masquerading as a comic, although some of its descendents might be. I guess there are people in this world who are as childish and selfish as that, but few of those people go out later and lay their selfishness bare for the world to see as Pekar does. It also played that way, to my eyes, on the printed page.
