The text is handprinted by Carson and creates a feeling of emotional fervor and highlights the poetic elements of the play. However, at first I wasn’t quite sure they worked together.

I enjoyed this one in particular in that it refreshed my memory that Greek Mythology can often be an interesting parallel to current political times and that Ann Carson continues to find inventive ways to bring refreshing entertainment into my midst. As most people who carsoj me realize, I am, at heart, a classicist. That “nick” is suggestive of a chipped ancient sculpture, a prison, a critical moment — or, as Carson’s cast-list suggests, a ghostly presence: Carson’s play was adapted with collaborator Robert Currie, and is accompanied by translucent vellum pages with drawings by Bianca Stone.

If someone hasn’t read Antigone before, I don’t know if this is the best place to start, but it’s well worth checking out if you are a fan of Sophocles, like me, or want to see a varson spin on a timeless classic.
