I like long books, and Carrion Comfort is very long.

Still, for such a huge tome it’s a breezingly fast read, much more enjoyable that the plodding Summer of Nightalthough the book certainly did not need to be pages long. Slmmons simply do not like the sound of the word “Negress”. See all 3 questions about Carrion Comfort…. They all fit their roles perfectly. All the characters are real. There’s lots of places where the novel easily deserves a 5 star, just on reflection, alone, and since this came out nearly 30 years ago I’m not going to fuss too much over spoilers.

Saul believes the people they are hunting have the same powers he witnessed in Nazi Germany. The horror is not in your face here, but takes a backseat to more action and suspense than I expected.

Carrion Comfort

An absolute Must Read for the Horror Fan. Natalie, Rob, Melanie, and Harod were also some of my favorite characters.

She felt so natural, real, yet not real, because it is hard to find people with purpose aimed towards finding good in others. Tony Harod, a vile Hollywood producer who only uses his Ability to subjugate and rape women, has been offered a membership in the Island Club if he agrees to help hunt down Willi and Melanie. He has that likeability csrrion is required for true evil.

The ease at which she ruins lives and Uses people is unsettling. Not only are these parties involved in a bigger picture, but they also have their own stories and action. I found myself cheering on those who aimed to rid the world of evil. The characters who successfully vanquish these racist and sexist foes in the climax of the novel are the very groups the villains consider less than human.

As far as main characters go, Saul was my definite favorite. Carrion Comfort is aimmons with mind vampires, people who ca Carrion Comfort is a beast of a book.

In case you’re interested, here’s exhibit A and exhibit B. And I am very, very hungry. Four Dan Simmons books into it and I can say he remains near the top of my list. You betcha—and you will obey it.

Harod, being technically a full voting member of the club, abstains; caring less about old ambitions and more about surviving. Well, if you were giving an award for the most effective you’d have a tough choice between carrioon manipulative Oberst, Willi Borden, the ever-increasingly insane Melanie, the fanatical Reverend Sutter, C.

It’s a complicated book to rate because some parts were 5 stars and some parts felt more like 3 stars Oct 29, Alondra rated it it was amazing Shelves: I was seriously disappointed by it but at the same time, I did really enjoy some parts. Regaining his willpower for a moment in an explosion, he flees into the forest and survives the rest of the holocaust amongst Partisan Polish and later Partisan Jewish forces before finding solace in Zionist Israel.

A complaint would be that the book did feel too long Humanity has this potential. I’m a very visual reader, and this book is very visual. A lot of riveting plot is generated from this simple premise. It is unknown if the author meant for comparisons to be drawn between this character and figures such as Jerry FalwellBilly James Hargisand other Evangelicals involved in scandal.

For most of the book, I’d say two-thirds of the way, it was a five star book. I did know from friends warning me, to ignore the cover blurb comparing this to King’s The Stand, so I was not disappointed to find the two are worlds apart, but both are epic in scope and flawlessly executed. This Ability has been used throughout history to have a direct or indirect influence, via the perceived charisma of world leaders comtort the actions of more covert individuals, on everything from individual senseless murders to the Holocaust.

I love the title of the novel. So I docked it a whole star for just being too damn long I could have shaved off at least a couple hundred pages EASILY and for some unnecessary roughness.

For me, it could have lost about pages.

It would be easy to call her a monster, not human – but that is a cop out: This was a great and cooling summer read for me. It is my opinion mind you this opinion is based solely on this book, as I have not read anything else by Dan Simmons, but Carrion Comfort is the novel that put him on the map, so I’m judging it as a good example of his work that Dan Simmons is crap at pacing, and he is absolutely in love with his own voice.

Carrion Comfort is one of those books that are so well written and so gripping, that you just have to keep on reading. I have Drood and The Terror queued up in the next few months.
