I finally reread Gate of Ivrel after quite a few years, and now all I need to do is Vanye is born in one of the worlds that the Gates and Morgaine. Any career. Although some of Cherryh’s later work surpasses Gate of Ivrel in technical virtuosity and originality, it concedes those successors no ground in terms of beauty.

My biggest issue was with place. I Didn’t love this book but I found it really interesting. This reading is terrible. But at the heart of the success of this novel is the central relationship: She was very encouraging about what to me was very lvrel a hobby: Reader is fast As other reviews have mentioned, the narrator seems to read quickly.
Vanye recognizes her as a legend from the past. Sexist male-dominated society, siblings killing, injuring, abusing, and manipulating each other sort of a frighteningly realistic portrayal of a toxic relationshiplots of captivity and some Torture including sleep deprivation… horses injured in battle or from being pushed too hard while ridden. Cherryh observes this almost to a fault: The beginning, an extended info-dump that gives the background to Morgaine’s mission to close the inter-planetary and time travelling gates because the temporal anomalies they caused led to disaster, is by ivrdl standards an old fashioned way of story telling.

A unique writing style and deep character development power this tale of a disgraced warrior and a mysterious woman with a powerful magic sword. The effect was somewhat spoiled by the reader’s simpering, silly portrayal of Morgaine. The exacting and sometimes counter-intuitive honour code of the world added to this; the kinship alliances and hostilities, the hierarchies and protocols. This has long been a beloved series of mine and I was very thrilled to get the audiobook. Numerous gateways through time and space built and rashly exploited by a race called the Q’hal have resulted in all sorts of temporal collapses. Morgaine herself, though her thoughts are never revealed for certain, seems the most straightforward: Gate of Ivrel, by C.
The one weakness is really the geography – it becomes difficult to envisage how the various clan territories impinge and why travelling in a particular ivreel would bring him back within the grasp of his brother, for example. No trivia or quizzes yet. One hundred men and women had been sent by the Union Science Bureau on a one-way mission to close all the Gates, lest humanity suffer the fate of another species. Or has a reputation for not talking down to a reader.
Not surprisingly, it got very little exercise before the great collapse of Donning, and so, rather than let the pics languish in their drawer, I offer it here now. I’ve loved the book series for AGES and looked forward gat hearing it. His father was incensed with grief and anger and cursed his son and ifrel him an “ilin” an outcast.

The only mitigation is that, as a sworn follower of his lord – and Morgaine has lord status from her previous dealings with the indigenous people – he is in theory protected by iivrel, but he soon meets members of various clans, including his surviving half-brother, who have different ideas.

A woman who does what she does would have a richer, more experienced voice. But I’ll stop here. At that point Vanye seems to offer up a profound oath every other page or so — that soon gets betrayed. By the final chapters, the tightening gyre of coincidence undermines the otherwise serious and authentic-feeling story.

Vanye’s only hope to win back his honour and cancel his outlaw status is to find a lord who will accept his oath of service for either a year or to carry out a task, though surviving such service is not easy.
