Adi rated it it was amazing Sep 01, My take on it is that it is useful, but some constructions are not quite natural Thai, and the translations will seem a little contrived – but dont tthai me wrong though – it IS a good reference work to have on your shelf. When I saw the heading of this thread, that’s the book I thought it would be about. Also, explanations are missing, you won’t learn the order of referfnce in a Thai sentence as I had actually hoped forthere are no explanations on the exact situations in what you have ihgbie use which different translations, apart from really really brief two-sentence statements that are very vague.

Designed as a practical description of the spoken language, both the informal and formal varieties. The transliteration system is good: No trivia or quizzes yet.

Likewise, the examples focus on the current spoken language and on vocabulary which is relevant to most students. I have been fortunate to meet two reffrence in very different places, and with their help produce books on two very different topics: It should be welcomed by anyone learning the language past beginner level.

Orchid Press – Book Review – Thai Reference Grammar

The book is divided into chapters based on common grammatical-structural categories, such as questions, conjunctions and tenses, but these grammatial thao are for convenience only and the book is not a Western grammatical analysis, but rather a practical description of the spoken language, both the informal and the formal variety. It is very thorough, but also very dry, and requires substantial knowledge of linguistic refwrence.

I spent three hours with it today, and covered less than half a chapter! This book here might still be useful though when you suddenly want to know how to say “For about 2 years” or “If he had gone” or for a list of common classifiers, so it’s at least not completely useless.

Having read quite a few of them and having done a portion of the sentence-level alignment to prepare them for use in the corpusI’ve run into a mix of errors, mistranslations, sentences left out here and there For example, I would have liked more discussion of the different levels of politeness or formality in the language.


The authors analysed examples of spoken and colloquial Thai, then came up with their own examples to illustrate how sentences are built. Overall, it’s a wonderful book and a great resource for people interested in the modern Thai language.
