As it is, I can’t settle, I want someone who is fierce and will love me until death and know that love is as strong as death, and be on my side for ever and ever. It is a coming-of-age story about a lesbian girl who grows up in an English Pentecostal community. I think I might have enjoyed it even more had I any interest in the religious side of it – it was not preachy in any way, but poor little Jeanette has interactions with a wide variety of religious sorts, all of them quick to point their fingers at Jeanette the moment she does something they view threatening to their beliefs.

The plethora of Bible allusions, for which the novel won many accolades, obviously weren’t obvious to me, and so I think I missed the most clever part of the book.
